The meditative practice of Hayagriva is part of the lineage of Buddha Amitabha, Guru of Avalokiteshvara, and is one of the hidden treasures –terma– of Guru Padmasambhava. Much of the secret transmission of the Hayagriva practice was brought from India to Tibet by the great Nyngmapa master and translator Vairochana Lotsawa.

Benefits of the practice

On a relative level the practice of Hayagriwa is extremely powerful in pacifying obstacles created by nagas and local spirits, for example infectious diseases, cancer, skin problems, paralysis. It is also effective against epilepsy due to malevolent astrological influences. In these times of degeneration, the kaliyuga, due to the power of mental defects, negative actions and lack of inner peace, sentient beings suffer and experience numerous hindrances, diseases, sudden and untimely deaths. Practising and praying to the guru buddhas Hayagriwa, Manjushri and Vajrapani is highly advisable in this era of the kaliyuga. At an ultimate level the practice of Hayagriwa helps to control the gross, subtle and extremely subtle mind and leads to the realisation of the Clear Light and Truth Body of a buddha, the Dharmakaya.
