Ü-Chen Tibetan calligraphy workshop

Hours: 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m./3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Workshop schedule:

Day 1:

Introduction, historical background, basic traits.

Hints on the composition of words and sentences in Tibetan.

Beginning examination of the alphabet.

Day 2:

Continuation of the alphabet, superscript and subscript letters.

Writing of learners’ names transliterated into Tibetan, or creation of a mantra by the teacher, conclusion.

 

Materials needed for learners:

– 2/3 blocks of calligraphy paper, A3 size, smooth, minimum 75 g/m2

– 1 Pilot Parallel Pens, with 6 mm nib (blue cap);

– 1 50 ml bottle of regular black fountain pen ink and a syringe to refill the cartridge, once the one that is already included in the Pilot package is used up;

– 1 ruler or square, at least 40 cm long

– 1 soft pencil, eraser and sharpener.

OR, as an alternative to the Pilot Parallel Pen:

– 2 Mitchell nibs with 1 penholder

– 1 bottle of black India ink

– A flat brush for use with black tempera or acrylic is also fine, but it is more difficult to use than the nibs.

NOTE: To get started, however, the teacher would recommend the Pilot pen. It is more expensive but also much more practical and easier to use.

About the teacher:

Daniele Tamponi was born in 1974, the year of the Wood Tiger, in Turin.

He became interested in Buddhism at a very early age, following in his father’s footsteps. He owes his early years of teaching to Lama Dino Chang Chub Ghyaltzen, a disciple of Lama Gangchen Rinpoche of the Gelug tradition. He then took Refuge under the name Karma Samdrup Targye with Ven. Lama Karma Shartrul Rinpoche, of the Karma Kagyu tradition, the same tradition followed by his Lama Tashi Mannox, with whom he has been studying since 2013. His practice of Tibetan calligraphy began thanks to a gift from Lama Dino: the book Tibetan Calligraphy by Sanje Elliot, and from there his path began. Since then, he has given several workshops in Italy and abroad, both in person and online. Today he continues to practice daily in U-chen and U-med, following Lama Tashi Mannox’s instructions, and calligraphy is one of his main spiritual practices.
